  1. Search Engine Marketing is defined as an undertaking or activity aimed at attracting web traffic from the search engines to a web site.
  2. There are two main types of search engine marketing namely (i) Search Engine Optimization (ii) Search Engine Advertising /Paid Search or Pay Per Click Campaign.
  3. Search Engine Optimization consists of a series of measures undertaken to bolster or improve the position of a web site in the Search Engine Results Page(SERP) for a set of targeted keywords.

The measures include:

  1. Optimizing a single page for one or two keywords that your customers or clients would use to search for your product or services in a search engine.
  2. Those keywords should be part of the HTML title tag for that page.
  3. Include a brief description of what that page is about in the HTML meta description tag.
  4. The target keywords should be part of your content preferably in the beginning part of the heading and body of the first paragraph.
  5. Pay particular attention to site structure that is use title tag for title and H1- H6 for heading etc.
  6. Validate your HTML and CSS using validators that are available at http://validator.w3.org, http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/
  7. Keep your paragraphs short and to the point, ideally no more than six lines per paragraph.
  8. Write good and relevant content interspersed with your keywords and keep it fresh by updating frequently.
  9. Use the HTML alt tag for all your images, this tells those with visual impairment what that image is about, it is also good for the search engine spiders.
  10. Provide text equivalent for any Flash content.
  11. Avoid the use of tables for purposes of site layout, use Cascading Style Sheet instead for that, this would make your web pages load faster.
  12. Encourage others to link to you using your keywords in the anchor link text referred to as incoming links, avoid the temptation of buying links or using link farm rather if you write good content and promote it using blog or social networking web sites and services, others would link to you and your link building will grow naturally.

  14. Create a site map for your site it is good not for humans but search engine spiders as well.

  16. Include a site search feature for your web site.
  17. Try and adhere to web standards design that is use HTML for site structure, CSS for layout and presentation, Javascript for behavior , keep them separate and link to, this approach makes site maintenance easier later on.
  18. Last but not the least, test , measure and refine(tweak) , use Google webmaster and analytics tools to assist you do this.
